Institute's new chair to focus on careers

Paul Amadi, the new chair of the Institute of Fundraising, will concentrate on career and professional development during his tenure.

Amadi, group head of fundraising at the RNIB, said: "Fundraisers are anxious to be seen as professionals and they want support in progressing their careers. I want to put on more events like this: training programmes. I want to make sure we are responsive to the needs of our members."

Amadi, who takes over as chair today, will keep his ear close to the ground at the convention to find out what those needs are. He will take part in a fundraising ‘speed networking' session on Wednesday and talk to delegates to find out what is most important to them.

"What I hope to bring to the role is my personal energy and experience as a practitioner," he said. "The work of the institute affects me directly. If we make progress on Gift Aid for higher-rate taxpayers, I have an easier relationship with my chief executive."

Joe Saxton, who is retiring as chair after three and a half years, said: "There is so much more to do. But if anyone can, he can."
