The founding group behind the code of practice on good governance should produce tailored advice for different types of charity, according to research by nfpSynergy, on behalf of the Governance Hub.

The report, Good Governance: a Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector, says versions should be produced for arts and international groups, social enterprises and organisations outside England. It also calls for a second edition of the general code and a toolkit allowing organisations to assess how they are implementing it.

It says 71 per cent of respondents were aware of the code and 80 per cent found it clear and useful, but only 42 per cent were using it.

"The challenge is to convert awareness figures into more code users," said Gill Edelman, chair of the Governance Hub, which oversaw the code but has now closed. She stressed the importance of continued funding.

Responsibility for the code has now reverted to its founding group, including Acevo, Charity Trustee Networks and the NCVO.
